Mungeli, Chhattisgarh: A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday as an under-construction chimney at the Kusum Plant in the Saragaon area of Mungeli district collapsed, leaving several feared dead and over 25 workers reportedly trapped under the debris.
According to Mungeli Superintendent of Police Bhojram Patel, the collapse occurred when the silo structure of the factory gave way. “We received information that part of the chimney, the silo, collapsed at the smelting plant, trapping several workers. Rescue operations are ongoing. Around 3-4 people are possibly still trapped, but the exact situation will be clear after the debris is removed,” said Patel.
Two injured workers were rescued and have been shifted to a hospital in Bilaspur for treatment. Personnel from multiple departments are on-site, working tirelessly to clear the debris and save those trapped underneath.
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at the site, as it comes just days after nine coal mine workers were stranded in Umrangso in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.
Authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations, with efforts focused on pulling out trapped workers as swiftly as possible. Further updates are awaited as the situation develops.
