Nagpur: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, successfully removed a rare and aggressive adrenal tumour measuring around 6 cm—about the size of an egg—from the adrenal gland of an 82-year-old female patient through minimally invasive, robot-assisted surgery.
The patient, who had been experiencing hypertension and pain in the left abdomen, accidentally discovered she had Adrenocortical Carcinoma during a routine health check-up. A tumour was detected through an ultrasound of the abdomen, and further examinations confirmed that the tumour was cancerous.
The adrenal cortex, which is the outer part of the adrenal gland, plays a vital role in producing hormones that support essential bodily processes and organ functions. Symptoms of adrenal cortex carcinoma include weight gain or loss, muscle weakness, trouble sleeping, a deepening voice, increased hair growth, pain in the abdomen or lower back, and loss of appetite.
Elaborating on the case details, Dr. Kawadu Jawade, Associate Consultant – Surgical Oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, said, “This was a rare case of adrenocortical carcinoma—an aggressive tumour derived from the adrenal cortex—with an estimated annual incidence of 0.72 per million population. The patient opted for robot-assisted surgery after understanding the state-of-the-art Da Vinci Xi robot, which offers 3D high-definition imaging of the surgical area. As a result of this minimally invasive approach, the patient was mobilised within the same day of surgery and was Discharged on the 2 nd Day.
Highlighting the importance of routine health check-ups, Dr.Jawade emphasized that this patient’s cancer was detected at stage 1 due to regular health screening. Early detection led to positive treatment outcomes and improved patient survival.
This successful procedure highlights the advanced surgical capabilities at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, and underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing cutting-edge healthcare solutions for complex medical cases.
