The Guwahati Police has registered an FIR against popular YouTubers including Ashish Chanchlani, Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija for allegedly promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussions in a show titled India’s Got Latent, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.
The case has been registered by the Guwahati Crime Branch under multiple sections of the BNS 2023, IT Act 2000, Cinematograph Act 1952, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986.
Police Investigation Underway
Guwahati Joint Police Commissioner Ankur Jain, speaking to media, confirmed that the FIR was lodged after a complaint regarding obscene remarks about familial relationships surfaced online.
“The FIR details how these YouTubers made comments on the father-mother-child relationship in an obscene manner. A vulgar act was performed on the YouTube show, which led us to register the case. The main host was Samay Raina, while Ranveer Allahbadia made the controversial remark in the viral clip. We are identifying all individuals involved and will take the strictest possible action,” Jain said.
The police investigation is currently ongoing.
Political Reaction and Criticism
The controversy has also sparked a political debate, with Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi announcing that she will raise the issue in the IT & Communication Standing Committee.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Chaturvedi slammed Allahbadia and others for their “vulgar and blasphemous content”, criticizing their influence on young audiences.
“We need to set boundaries. These platforms influence young minds and are passing off absolute rubbish as content. The language used by Ranveer Allahbadia, which was actively encouraged by others on that comedy panel, is unacceptable,”she stated.
Ranveer Allahbadia Issues Apology
Facing widespread backlash, Ranveer Allahbadia posted a video apology on Monday, admitting that his attempt at humor was inappropriate and unfunny. He confirmed that the controversial segments had been removed from the show’s recording and conceded that “comedy isn’t his strength.”
The case has sparked a larger discussion on content regulation, free speech, and accountability in digital entertainment.
