Nagpur: In an effort to reduce road accident fatalities by 10%, the Nagpur Traffic Police has announced revised speed limits for vehicles within the city and on highways, following guidelines from the Maharashtra Traffic Police.
The new speed limits take into account improved road connectivity and safety measures while slightly increasing permissible speeds in certain areas.
Revised Speed Limits:
- Motorcycles:
- Plain roads (dual-lane with divider): 60 km/hr
- Ghat roads: 40 km/hr
- Passenger Vehicles (8-seater & 9-seater):
- Plain roads: 60 km/hr
- Hilly terrain: 40 km/hr
- Commercial Passenger Vehicles:
- Plain roads: 50 km/hr (8+ seater), 40 km/hr (9+ seater)
- Hilly terrain: 30 km/hr for both categories
- Two-lane access-controlled roads (M2/M3 category & transport vehicles – N category):
- Plain roads: 80 km/hr
- Ghat sections: 40 km/hr
- Commercial passenger vehicles (highways):
- Plain roads: 100 km/hr
- Hilly terrain: 60 km/hr
- Four-lane highways and above:
- Commercial passenger vehicles: 90 km/hr
- Transport vehicles: 60 km/hr
- Four-wheelers transporting nine or more passengers:
- City limits: 60 km/hr
- Hilly terrain: 40 km/hr
Three-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, and two-wheelers will continue to be restricted in no-entry zones for vehicles.
The new speed limits will be in effect until March 10, 2025. Citizens can submit suggestions or objections during this period, after which modifications may be made based on feedback, stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Archit Chandak.
Authorities have highlighted that speeding remains a leading cause of road accidents in Nagpur, often endangering pedestrians and other motorists. Many victims suffer serious injuries requiring hospitalization, while others face life-long disabilities.
