The central government has amended the Passport Rules, 1980, making birth certificates the only accepted proof of date of birth for passport applicants born on or after October 1, 2023.
An official notification regarding the amendment was issued this week. The revised rules will come into effect once they are published in the official Gazette, officials confirmed.
Under the new guidelines, only birth certificates issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, Municipal Corporation, or any other authority empowered under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, will be considered valid proof of date of birth for individuals born on or after the specified date.
For applicants born before October 1, 2023, alternative documents such as a driving license, school leaving certificate, or other recognized records can still be used as proof of birth.
