Have you ever found it difficult to secure a lower berth while booking a train ticket? If you’re a senior citizen, a woman over 45, or someone with a disability, you’re in luck! Indian Railways prioritizes these passengers by reserving lower berth quotas in each coach to ensure a more comfortable journey.
As per media report, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently informed the Lok Sabha about the measures being implemented to ensure that those who need lower berths the most can easily access them. In fact, if you belong to any of these categories, you won’t even need to request a lower berth – it will be automatically assigned to you, depending on availability.
To improve accessibility, Indian Railways has set aside a specific quota of lower berths across various classes. In Sleeper Class, six to seven lower berths are reserved per coach. In Air-Conditioned 3-Tier (3AC), four to five lower berths are allocated, while in Air-Conditioned 2-Tier (2AC), three to four lower berths are reserved for senior citizens and women.
Moreover, a special reservation quota for persons with disabilities is available on all mail and express trains, including Rajdhani and Shatabdi, regardless of concession benefits. This quota includes four berths: two lower berths in Sleeper Class, four berths (with two lower berths) in 3AC/3E, and four seats in reserved Second Sitting (2S) and AC Chair Car (CC).
If lower berths remain unoccupied during the journey, priority is given to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women who were initially assigned middle or upper berths.
