To increase the number of vultures, which are under serious threat of extinction, 34 vultures were brought from the Jatayu Protection and Breeding Centre, Pinjor in Haryana, for release in Melghat, Pench and Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Projects. The process of their release into the forest is in the final stages. They were initially kept in the Pre-release bird centres.
Melghat Forest Officials in Melghat said that 15 vultures were released and are in good health. The Bombay Natural History Society has taken steps to protect vultures. The vultures eat the meat of dead bodies and organic waste.
They are important for maintaining nature’s balance. Their existence and survival were threatened during the last two decades for various reasons. The organisation started breeding and protection centres in Haryana, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Assam.
