With a surge in passenger traffic during the summer season, Central Railway’s Nagpur Division has intensified its efforts to curb unauthorized vending at stations and onboard trains. The crackdown aims to ensure food safety, maintain hygiene standards, and prevent revenue losses caused by illegal sales.
In the past two weeks alone, the Commercial Department has taken action against 122 unauthorized vendors operating across various routes and stations. During these inspections, officials seized and destroyed unapproved and potentially hazardous food items—including unbranded buttermilk, non-railway bottled water, and adulterated “chana”—posing serious health risks to passengers.
The drive is being spearheaded by a special task force comprising commercial managers, catering inspectors, and other enforcement officers. In just the last week, 19 cases of unauthorized vending were detected on prominent trains such as the Secunderabad-Danapur Express (12791/12792) and the Sanghamitra Express (12295/12296), as well as on routes including Nagpur-Ballarshah, Nagpur-Sewagram, Nagpur-Itarsi, and Nagpur-Badnera. Betul and Sewagram stations saw multiple offenders penalized, with six vendors booked at each location.
Officials said the ongoing enforcement efforts have already led to a noticeable decline in illegal vending. Central Railway reiterated its commitment to passenger welfare and emphasized that the campaign will continue with a zero-tolerance policy toward violations.
