A police complaint has been filed against cricketer Virat Kohli in connection with the tragic stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 people dead during a felicitation event for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The complaint was submitted on Friday at Cubbon Park Police Station by A.M. Venkatesh, a representative of the Naija Horatagaarara Vedike.
According to police sources, the complaint has been officially received and is likely to be examined as part of the ongoing investigation linked to the already registered First Information Report (FIR) in the case.
The Karnataka Police had earlier registered an FIR naming the RCB franchise, event management company DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee. The FIR alleges that the victory celebration was organised without the requisite approvals and safety arrangements.
The FIR invokes multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 115(2) and 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt), 118(2) read with Section 3(5) (grievous hurt by several persons with common intention), 190 (unlawful assembly), 132 (use of criminal force against a public servant), and 125(a) and 125(b) (rash, negligent acts endangering human life and filing false affidavits).
In a related development, two more cases have been registered at the same police station. One of these, based on a complaint by Roland Gomes—a victim injured in the stampede and hospitalised—also names the RCB franchise, KSCA, and DNA under Section 125(a) of the BNS.
Investigations are ongoing to determine accountability for the lapses that led to the tragic incident.
