Nagpur’s long-awaited District General Hospital at Mankapur has finally opened its doors — ending a 9-year delay and bringing a major healthcare boost to the city’s underprivileged population.
Built on the premises of the Regional Mental Hospital, the project got administrative approval in 2016 but was plagued by bureaucratic delays until construction wrapped up in 2025. Even then, the hospital remained idle due to a pending Occupation Certificate, which was granted just two weeks ago.
Since then, the Outpatient Department (OPD) has treated 424 patients within days, offering care in medicine, gynecology, surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, ENT, and ophthalmology from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On Friday, the 24×7 trauma and emergency ward (casualty) also went live — allowing emergency admissions across key departments except gynecology, which will continue at Daga Hospital until further notice.
In a move toward inclusive care, the hospital has launched a dedicated ‘Hirakani Room’ for breastfeeding mothers, inaugurated by District Civil Surgeon Dr. Nivrutti Rathod and senior medical officials.
“The hospital now has full infrastructure, staff, and equipment. Patient response is rising steadily,” Dr. Rathod said.
Full inpatient services and surgeries are expected to begin within two months — placing the facility at the heart of Nagpur’s public healthcare system.
