300 astronomers from 64 countries to attend
The 18th International Organisation of Astronomy Olympiad (IOAA) 2025 will be held at Homi Bhabha Centre of Science Education of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, from August 11 to 21. About 300 astronomers from across the world will participate in the IOAA.
The event, supported by the Prime Minister’s Office and the Department of Atomic Energy, is not only a competition, but is a festival for astronomers in India. Astronomers from 64 countries have confirmed their participation, many of whom will be visiting India for the first time. Besides the 300 participants, 140 guides will attend the event, which is a sort of record for the IOAA started in the year 2006.
A formal inauguration will be held on August 12 with the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Prof Ajay Sood, as the chief guest. Former Vice-President of IOAA Prof Ajay Kembhavi will be the guest of honour. ISRO Chief Dr V Narayanan will be the chief guest for the valedictory function at Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, on August 21. Head of Homi Bhabha National Research Centre and former Secretary of Atomic Energy Department Dr Anil Kakodkar, will be the guest of honour.
