Mumbai witnessed relentless downpours for the third consecutive day on Monday, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to escalate its warning from an earlier orange alert to a red alert for the city.
Early morning showers triggered waterlogging and traffic congestion in several areas, including Andheri, Ghatkopar, Navi Mumbai, and parts of South Mumbai. While local train services continued to operate, minor delays were reported due to water accumulation on the tracks.
According to IMD, rainfall intensity is expected to increase in the coming hours, raising the threat of urban flooding in low-lying areas. Citizens have been urged to exercise caution along coastal stretches such as Marine Drive, Juhu, and Worli Sea Face, particularly during high tide.
Despite uneven rainfall in catchment regions, Mumbai’s seven lakes have reached 90 percent capacity, ensuring stability in the city’s water supply. Meanwhile, Pune too has been placed under a red alert as the region braces for extremely heavy showers.
