Nagpur’s sanitation workers are set to get a long-awaited relief, as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will construct 400 two-BHK houses at Uppalwadi under the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Shram Safalya Yojana. The foundation stone will soon be laid by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, announced Sher Singh alias Satish Dagor, Chairman of the State Sanitation Workers’ Commission.
Dagor chaired a meeting at the NMC headquarters with Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari to review issues faced by sanitation staff.
Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, Assistant Commissioner Shyam Kapse, Medical Officer Dr. Deepak Selokar, and Chief Sanitation Officer Dr. Gajendra Mahalle were among the officials present, along with representatives of workers’ associations.
The Uppalwadi project will ensure permanent housing rights for more than 400 families, fulfilling a long-pending demand.
Dagor also declared that educated sanitation workers will be given service seniority on par with other municipal employees, providing them with fair opportunities for career advancement.
In another welfare measure, NMC has agreed in principle to introduce a cashless health insurance scheme for sanitation workers, giving families access to medical treatment without financial burden.
Dagor further proposed building a Corona Warrior Martyrs Memorial to honor sanitation workers and NMC employees who died while serving during the pandemic.
The combination of housing, healthcare support, and memorial recognition marks an important step toward restoring dignity and security for the city’s frontline workforce.
