Citizens and former corporators are raising serious concerns over the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) draft prabhag structure, especially Prabhag 4. Despite the slow start to the objections process, tensions are mounting as glaring flaws come to light.
On Monday, Vidyasagar D. Tripathi of Dharmnagar, Bharatwada, filed a formal objection, slamming the multi-member ward system. He argued that having four corporators per prabhag dilutes accountability. “Residents are bounced between representatives who deny responsibility,” he stated, demanding a return to the single-member system for clearer governance.
Tripathi didn’t stop there. He exposed technical and administrative lapses in the draft, claiming Prabhag 4 has been arbitrarily stitched together using parts of East and North Nagpur. This, he says, has triggered confusion between Lakadganj and Aasi Nagar zones. Worse, the draft ignores natural and urban boundaries like rivers, roads, and railway lines—repeating the outdated 2017 layout with no scientific basis.
He urged NMC to either scrap the multi-member model or at least redraw Prabhag 4 using logical limits: Pili River to the north, Nag River and Bharatwada to the east, Pardhi-Chikhli Chowk in the south, and Kalamna Market to the west. A similar objection has reportedly surfaced in the Lakadganj zone.
Citizens and political aspirants continue to scrutinize the displayed maps at NMC headquarters, but the silence of major parties raises questions. With a September 4 deadline looming, will NMC listen—or repeat past mistakes?
