Nagpur will soon host a landmark cultural institution with the construction of a Tribal History Museum on the campus of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU).
The project, sanctioned at ₹44.70 crore by the Public Works Department (PWD), has a core construction cost of ₹37.57 crore and is targeted for completion within nine months, including the monsoon period.
The museum will occupy a three-storey RCC building of nearly 40,000 sq. ft., featuring modern and visitor-friendly facilities. Plans include large exhibition halls, digital display galleries, seminar and research rooms, an auditorium, archival storage, landscaped gardens, barrier-free access, parking space, and safety features designed to meet earthquake-resistant norms.
Exhibits will be organized floor-wise around distinct themes: daily life and traditions of Maharashtra’s tribal communities, tribal participation in freedom struggles and social reform, and evolving art forms such as crafts, music, and oral storytelling.
Artefacts, manuscripts, dioramas, and digital installations will bring these themes alive, with interactive elements aimed at engaging younger audiences.
Communities including the Gond, Madia, Kolam, Halba, and Pardhi will find their histories documented through objects, paintings, tools, and folklore.
The auditorium will further function as a cultural stage for performances, conferences, and student events, ensuring the institution remains dynamic rather than static.
Experts say the project will firmly place Nagpur on India’s cultural tourism map, strengthen academic research, create opportunities for artisans, and provide long-overdue recognition to tribal communities whose contributions have often remained outside mainstream history.
