Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has strongly objected to permission granted to BHMS doctors to prescribe modern medicines, and has demanded immediate withdrawal of the notification and removal of BHMS doctors from the Maharashtra Medical Council’s registration list.
The Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) is superficial and inadequate. It is only a one-year bridge course and does not include paediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, psychiatry, orthopaedics, dermatology, radiology, anaesthesia etc. CCMP is only an orientation course. Granting a licence for modern medicine is illegal, based on this course, MARD has said. It cannot be considered equivalent to the one-year internship for the MBBS course. BHMS degree holders are already registered with the Maharashtra Council of Homoeopathy. Their registration under the National Medical Council could pose a danger to patients.
MARD also argued that many of the 2,366 PHCs are not functioning due to lack of adequate facilities. Every year, more than 10,800 students are admitted for the MBBS course. Many of the MBBS doctors willing to work in rural areas are left without posting. MARD also demanded posting of MBBS doctors in rural areas.
