New Delhi: The Income Tax Department on Monday granted taxpayers an additional day to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025–26, shifting the deadline from September 15 to September 16.
The deadline, which was initially July 31, had already been pushed once earlier. In a statement, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said: “The due date for filing ITRs for AY 2025–26, originally July 31, 2025, and later extended to September 15, 2025, has now been further extended to September 16, 2025.”
Officials said the decision was taken after several taxpayers reported difficulties completing the process due to recurring technical issues on the e-filing portal. To accommodate updates and maintenance, the portal will remain unavailable between 12:00 am and 2:30 am on September 16.
The department advised taxpayers not to wait until the last moment to avoid potential glitches or penalties.
Record Filings Cross 7 Crore
According to official figures, over 7 crore returns had been filed by September 15. The department said 7.3 crore ITRs were submitted this year, surpassing last year’s tally of 7.28 crore. “We thank taxpayers and professionals for their cooperation and urge those who haven’t filed yet to do so by September 16,” the statement added.
To support filers, the Income Tax helpdesk is operating round-the-clock through phone, live chat, WebEx sessions and social media platforms.
