The auspicious festival of Karwa Chauth, symbolising love, devotion, and the marital bond, will be observed this year on October 10, 2025, according to the Vedic calendar. The festival, celebrated on the fourth day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Kartik, holds deep significance among married Hindu women.
On this day, women observe a nirjala fast (without food or water) from sunrise until moonrise, praying for the long life, good health, and prosperity of their husbands. The day is dedicated to the worship of Karwa Mata, who is believed to bless marital happiness and longevity.
Sargi: The Pre-Dawn Tradition
A vital part of Karwa Chauth rituals is the Sargi, a special meal eaten before dawn. Traditionally, it is prepared and gifted by the mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law. The meal not only carries symbolic meaning but also provides the necessary nourishment to sustain women through the day-long fast.
As per the Brahma Muhurat, the ideal time to consume Sargi this year will be between 4:40 AM and 5:30 AM on October 10.
Key Muhurat and Timings
- Start of Chaturthi Tithi (Krishna Paksha of Kartik month): October 9 at 10:54 PM
- End of Chaturthi Tithi: October 10 at 7:38 PM
- Moonrise Timing: 7:42 PM on October 10
Fasting Do’s and Don’ts
Avoid black and white attire: Women are encouraged to wear auspicious colours such as red, pink, or yellow, symbolising love and prosperity. Black and white are considered inauspicious for the occasion.
Refrain from using sharp objects: Items like scissors, needles, and knives should be avoided, as their use is believed to reduce the spiritual benefits of the fast.
Do not donate white items: It is advised not to give away rice, milk, curd, or other white-coloured items on this day, as they are associated with the moon and considered inauspicious for donation during the fast.
The day concludes when women sight the moon through a sieve, offer water (arghya), and break their fast after their husbands offer the first sip of water — marking the end of a day filled with devotion, patience, and love.
