New Delhi: In a major digital upgrade for train travellers, the Indian Railways is preparing to launch an online facility that will allow passengers to change the date of their reserved tickets, sources from the Ministry of Railways confirmed. The feature, expected to go live by January 2026, marks a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at improving passenger convenience and reducing dependency on physical ticket counters.
At present, passengers can modify their travel dates only through ticket reservation counters, and that too at least 48 hours before departure, by paying a prescribed fee. The upcoming digital platform will bring this process online, enabling users to make changes seamlessly through the Railways’ website or mobile app.
Officials said the new system is being designed to replicate the existing offline process, ensuring transparency and reliability while cutting down manual workload. The Railways Ministry has already directed officials to develop and integrate the feature into its digital infrastructure as part of its broader mission to digitise passenger services.
“The initiative will significantly reduce congestion at ticket counters and save time for travellers,” a senior official stated, adding that the 48-hour rule for rescheduling is likely to continue under the new system.
While the current service fee covers reservation and cancellation costs, officials said the fee structure for the online version has not yet been finalised. Details regarding pricing and operational procedures will be announced closer to the launch date.
The move has been widely welcomed by passengers and industry experts, who believe the online rescheduling feature will offer greater flexibility, faster service, and a more user-friendly travel experience in line with India’s growing digital ecosystem.
