Nagpur: Major changes are underway at Itwari Railway Station, one of Nagpur’s oldest stations built in 1887, as part of a large-scale redevelopment plan. The low-level platform number 3, located beside the old terminal building, will soon be demolished — along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) post — to make way for the extension of the platform line from Itwari to Kalamna.
The redevelopment will enable the station to accommodate 24-coach trains, a significant upgrade from the current capacity of just eight coaches. In place of the old structure, two new platforms (numbers 2 and 3) will be constructed, equipped with modern passenger amenities.
As part of the project, the broad-gauge line adjacent to platform number 3 will be uprooted and relocated between the old terminal building and the RPF post. This shift will also create space to widen platforms 4 and 5, improving passenger movement and safety.
The Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction) will oversee the relocation work of the broad-gauge line. Meanwhile, construction of a new terminal building, along with three additional lines and platforms on the Lakadganj side of the station, is being carried out under the supervision of Maharail, though progress has been reportedly slow.
Once completed, the redevelopment will significantly enhance train handling capacity and passenger convenience, bringing Itwari closer to the standards of a modern railway hub while preserving its historic legacy.
