A large crowd gathered on the newly constructed flyover near the Wardhaman Nagar (Dipti Signal) on Monday evening, drawn by the decorative lighting recently installed on the structure. The flyover, now open for both pedestrian and vehicular movement, quickly became a spot of attraction rather than a smooth traffic corridor.
Residents and passers-by stopped on the carriageway to view and photograph the illuminated stretch, with many parking vehicles or standing along the lanes for a closer look. The resulting congestion slowed traffic movement considerably, causing a snarl at the signal during peak evening hours.
As vehicles backed up and commuters grew frustrated, local police arrived at the spot and moved to disperse the crowd, asking people to clear the carriageway and return home. Officers cited the disruption caused by the gathering, rather than any structural or safety issue, as the reason for the action, and no untoward incident was reported.
The flyover is part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades in East Nagpur aimed at easing congestion in the area. Monday’s episode, however, highlighted how the new structure’s lighting has itself become a draw for onlookers, briefly defeating the very purpose the bridge was built to serve.
