In a shocking incident, 23 people, including several children, fell ill after drinking contaminated water from 20-litre RO cans served at a birthday party in Nagpur’s Hanuman Nagar. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety and quality of packaged RO water supplied for social events.
The birthday celebration was held at a function hall on July 3. Soon after having food and drinking water from the RO cans, several guests began experiencing nausea and vomiting. A total of 23 people were hospitalised, with some admitted to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Isolation Hospital and others to private hospitals.
The NMC Health Department was informed about the incident on July 4 and immediately collected water samples from the venue for testing. Laboratory reports received on July 13 confirmed that the RO can water was contaminated.
Following the report, health officials traced the affected families, visited their localities, and distributed chlorine tablets and safe RO water sachets as a precautionary measure.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter quality checks on packaged RO drinking water supplied across the city.
