For the past few days, various rumors have been circulating on social media regarding smart electricity meters. These misleading messages include claims such as “a camera has been installed in the smart meter,” “customers’ homes are being watched,” and “activities inside the house are being recorded.” MSEDCL (Mahavitaran) has clarified that there is no truth to these claims, despite the confusion they have caused among some consumers.
Clarification on Technical Features:
There is no camera, video recording system, audio recording system, or any device capable of monitoring customer movements installed in the smart electricity meters. Smart meters are modern devices developed solely for the accurate recording of electricity consumption and for transmitting that information to MSEDCL’s control center through a secure digital system.
The small transparent part on the smart meter, which is being claimed as a camera on social media, is actually an Infrared (IR) communication port. This port is used by authorized technical staff to inspect the meter, conduct tests, or read data. It is used exclusively for data communication and does not possess any lenses, image sensors, or video recording capabilities like a camera. Therefore, it is impossible to take photos, record videos, or capture audio through this port.
Customer Privacy is Not at Risk:
Under no circumstances do smart meters monitor the people, movements, or daily activities inside a customer’s home. The meter only records technical data related to electricity consumption. Personal information and electricity usage data are protected by secure technical systems, and necessary cybersecurity measures have been implemented to maintain confidentiality.
Benefits of Smart Meters:
Smart meters are based on modern digital technology and aim to provide customers with more transparent, accurate, and reliable services. These meters allow for automatic recording of electricity consumption, which reduces human error in meter reading. Customers benefit from features such as accurate billing, real-time electricity usage information, faster complaint redressal, and more efficient power management. Through the MSEDCL mobile app or digital services, customers can easily view their own electricity usage, bill details, usage history, and other information, making it easier to identify unnecessary power consumption and save energy.
Trust Official Information, Not Rumors:
To dispel rumors and misunderstandings regarding smart meters, MSEDCL has organized consumer forums, awareness campaigns, information leaflets, and direct interaction programs in the Nagpur zone. During these initiatives, expert officials have explained the functionality of the smart meters and addressed consumers’ doubts, receiving an enthusiastic response.
MSEDCL has reiterated: “There is no camera of any kind in the smart electricity meters. These meters have been developed solely for accurate and secure electricity measurement, transparent billing, and modern customer service. Please trust official information, not rumors.”
