The Maharashtra government has approved ₹127 crore for the construction of five new hospitals under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) to strengthen healthcare facilities in rural areas.
The project will be jointly funded by the Centre and the State, with the Central Government contributing ₹76.29 crore (60%) and the Maharashtra Government providing ₹50.86 crore (40%).
The new hospitals will be built at Anjangaon Surji in Amravati, Pusad in Yavatmal, Shivapur and Akot in Akola district, and a 100-bed women’s hospital in Hingoli. Four of the five hospitals are located in the Vidarbha region.
The Public Health Department has allocated:
- ₹5.79 crore for a 50-bed hospital at Anjangaon Surji.
- ₹5 crore for a 100-bed women’s hospital in Hingoli.
- ₹4 crore for a 50-bed hospital at Pusad.
- ₹12 crore for a 100-bed hospital at Shivapur.
- ₹8 crore for a 100-bed hospital at Akot.
The funds will be released through the Joint Director of Health Services (Finance and Administration), Mumbai.
The proposal to strengthen rural healthcare was prepared by the Directorate of Health in 2020 after assessing patient load and the pressure on district hospitals. The aim is to improve access to healthcare in underserved areas and reduce the burden on district hospitals by providing better treatment facilities closer to people’s homes.
The project was approved by the Empowered Committee of the Union Minority Affairs Ministry during its 30th meeting in 2021.
