MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited) is prioritizing renewable energy in alignment with the policies of the Central and State Governments. The long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) till 2030 also include wind-solar hybrid energy. Recognizing this effort, MSEDCL was honoured with the ‘Wind India-2025’ award by the Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, at the International Conference of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), which represents India’s wind energy sector, held in Chennai on Thursday (Oct 30).
Under the guidance of Chief Minister and Energy Minister Hon. Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Smt. Abha Shukla has prepared a Resource Adequacy Plan for the state’s power sector. This plan has primarily encouraged power generation from various renewable sources, including solar energy, as well as wind-solar hybrid, wind, bagasse, biomass, and small hydropower. Furthermore, under the leadership of Chairman and Managing Director Shri Lokesh Chandra, MSEDCL has entered into long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) at preferential tariffs for non-conventional energy sources. This includes long-term PPAs for 4,344 MW of wind-solar hybrid power.
The award was conferred upon MSEDCL by the Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, on Thursday (Oct 30) at the three-day International Conference held at the Chennai Trade Centre. Chief Engineer Shri Dnyanesh Kulkarni (Renewable Energy, Mumbai) accepted the award on behalf of MSEDCL. Also present on the occasion were Energy Ministers Shri S. S. Sivashankar (Tamil Nadu) and Shri K. J. George (Kerala), Union Secretary Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi and Joint Secretary Shri Rajesh Kulhari (New and Renewable Energy), Shri Johann Saathoff (Parliamentary State Secretary, Germany), and Shri Girish Tanti, Chairman of the organizing committee and the Association.
According to the Energy Department’s Resource Adequacy Plan, an additional 45,000 MW of power, including a whopping 38,000 MW of green energy, will be added by 2030. The renewable energy capacity in Maharashtra will increase from 13% to 52%. This will involve an investment of approximately ₹3 lakh 30 thousand crore and create about 7 lakh jobs. Furthermore, there will be a saving of ₹82,000 crore in power purchases over the next five years, which will gradually reduce electricity tariffs for all categories.
