The Maharashtra government has declared December 2 as a paid holiday to facilitate voting in the upcoming elections to municipal councils and nagar panchayats across the state. As per the official notification, factories, shops, private offices, commercial establishments, and corporate firms must grant employees either a full day off or at least 2–3 hours of special leave to allow them to cast their votes.
Polling will take place for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats, marking one of the largest local electoral exercises of the year. The move is aimed at improving voter turnout and ensuring that work commitments do not prevent citizens from exercising their franchise.
Authorities have clarified that the holiday is mandated under the Representation of the People Act, and any employer failing to comply will be in violation of election guidelines. The state government has urged all eligible citizens to vote and contribute to strengthening grassroots democracy.
