Former Union Home Minister and veteran Congress leader Shivraj Patil passed away at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra, early Friday morning. He was 90.
Patil, who had been battling age-related health issues, breathed his last around 6:30 am. He had been receiving treatment at home. Congress leaders and workers across the state expressed deep grief and extended condolences to his family.
Born on October 12, 1935, Patil had an illustrious political career. He represented the Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven consecutive times between 1980 and 2004, winning in 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999. He also served as an MLA from Latur in 1972 and 1978.
Visuals from outside his residence showed large crowds of supporters and party members gathering to pay their respects.
Political Career
Shivraj Patil held several key positions during his decades-long political journey. A prominent leader from Maharashtra’s Marathwada region, he served multiple terms in Parliament and later became the Union Home Minister.
He was serving in this role during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Following widespread criticism over security lapses, Patil resigned, accepting moral responsibility for the failure to prevent the attack.
