Indian Railways has introduced a passenger-friendly change by revising the timing of reservation chart preparation, giving travellers earlier clarity on their ticket status.
Under the new system, passengers will be able to check whether their tickets are confirmed or on the waiting list up to 10 hours before a train’s departure. The move is aimed at reducing last-minute anxiety and helping passengers plan their journeys better.
Earlier, the first reservation chart was prepared just four hours before departure, often leaving travellers uncertain until the last moment. The revised timing is expected to bring significant relief, especially for long-distance passengers and those with connecting travel plans.
New chart preparation timings
According to the updated guidelines, the timing of the first reservation chart will depend on the train’s departure schedule:
- For trains departing between 5.00 am and 2.00 pm, the first chart will be prepared by 8.00 pm on the previous day.
- For trains leaving between 2.01 pm and 11.59 pm, and those departing between 12.00 midnight and 5.00 am, the chart will be prepared 10 hours before departure.
This ensures passengers receive timely and clearer information about their reservation status.
Reducing last-minute stress
Railway officials said the change is intended to ease stress for passengers, particularly those travelling from distant locations to board long-distance trains. Early chart preparation will help travellers make informed decisions about accommodation, onward connections and alternative arrangements if tickets remain unconfirmed.
Officials from the Railway Ministry said the revised system would enhance the overall travel experience by providing certainty well ahead of departure and enabling smoother trip planning.
Nationwide implementation
The Railway Board has directed all zonal divisions to implement the revised chart preparation schedule with immediate effect. The move is expected to improve transparency, reduce uncertainty and make train travel more predictable and passenger-friendly for millions of passengers across the country.
