NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured a rare glimpse of the aftermath of two cosmic collisions, helping scientists solve a mystery that had puzzled them for decades.
Years ago, astronomers detected a dense, bright object near the young star Fomalhaut and believed it might be a planet. They continued observing it over time, but in 2023, new images from Hubble revealed something unexpected: the bright object had disappeared, and a different one had appeared nearby. This surprising change showed that the object was not a planet after all.
Instead, scientists realized they were seeing the dusty debris left behind by two massive collisions in space. Giant rocky bodies had smashed into each other, creating thick clouds of dust that were bright enough to mimic planets. As time passed, the debris clouds spread out and eventually faded from view.
Capturing such events is extremely rare. Astronomers estimate that collisions of this scale occur in the same region of space only about once every 100,000 years, making Hubble’s observations a remarkable scientific find.
