Police in Himachal Pradesh have registered a case against three female students and a college professor in connection with alleged ragging and sexual assault following the death of a second-year student at a government degree college in Dharamshala.
Authorities said the student had recorded a video on her mobile phone before her death, in which she described the sexual and mental harassment she allegedly endured on campus.
According to a complaint lodged by the victim’s father, the student was subjected to severe ragging on September 18 by three fellow students—identified as Harshita, Akriti and Komolika—who allegedly assaulted her and threatened her to keep silent.
The complaint also named Ashok Kumar, a professor at the college, accusing him of inappropriate physical contact and mental harassment. The father stated that the professor’s alleged conduct caused his daughter extreme mental stress, which negatively impacted her health.
The student reportedly underwent treatment at several hospitals before dying on December 26 while receiving care at DMC Hospital in Ludhiana. The family said they delayed approaching the police due to trauma and filed the complaint only after finding the video recorded by the student.
Police have registered the case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009. Officials said the investigation, which initially focused on ragging, has now been expanded to include allegations of sexual harassment and a review of the student’s medical history.
Meanwhile, the college administration claimed it had not received any prior complaint, stated that the student was academically ineligible for promotion, and said it is cooperating with the investigation.
