On January 15, voters across Nagpur will follow a simple and secure process to elect their representatives to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Every voter must carry a valid photo identity card to the polling station. Election officials will verify the voter’s name in the electoral roll and apply indelible ink on one finger to prevent repeat voting.
Voters are then guided to a screened voting compartment to ensure complete secrecy. Voting will be conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) under the multi-member Prabhag system prescribed by the State Election Commission, Maharashtra.
Each ward seat within a Prabhag is displayed separately on the EVM and is colour-coded for easy identification: ‘A’ in white, ‘B’ in light pink, ‘C’ in light yellow, ‘D’ in light blue and ‘E’ in light green. Voters must carefully identify their ward before voting.
Inside the booth, voters press the blue button next to the chosen candidate’s name and symbol. Once the required buttons are pressed for all ward seats, a beep sound confirms that the vote has been successfully recorded. Most Prabhags in the city have four wards, and voters must cast a separate vote for each ward seat.
There is no VVPAT or paper slip in this election. After the beep is heard, the vote is locked and cannot be changed or cancelled, even if a mistake is made. The beep will be heard only after all required buttons are pressed, not after a single press.
Prabhag No. 38 is an exception, as it has only three wards. Voters from this Prabhag should be extra cautious, as only three ward options will appear on the EVM.
The entire process usually takes less than two minutes. One careful press and one confirming beep ensure that every vote counts.
