The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) has intensified its enforcement drive against public nuisance and littering, registering 291 cases and recovering Rs 2.40 lakh in penalties during a special crackdown.
The action targeted offences such as open urination and defecation, littering, illegal dumping of waste, improper disposal of biological waste, unhygienic commercial practices and the use of banned plastic bags. According to the NMC, seven cases of open urination and defecation in public places were booked, resulting in a fine of Rs 3,500.
The squad also took action against 79 handcart operators, roadside vendors, pan kiosks and vegetable sellers for failing to maintain cleanliness around their establishments, recovering Rs 31,600 in fines. A total of 14 individuals were penalised for throwing garbage on roads, footpaths and open spaces, while 23 shopkeepers were fined for dumping waste on public roads and pavements, leading to collections of Rs 1,400 and Rs 9,200, respectively.
Action was also taken against commercial establishments, with 25 malls, hotels, restaurants, cinema halls, marriage halls and caterers penalised for disposing of waste in public places. The civic body recovered Rs 50,000 from these violations.
The drive further resulted in:
- One case of illegal obstruction of a public road by erecting a pandal, arch or stage, attracting a fine of Rs 10,000.
- One case of washing vehicles or animals in public areas, resulting in a penalty of Rs 1,000.
- Five cases against chicken and mutton shops for improper disposal of biological waste, with fines totalling Rs 5,000.
- Fourteen hotels being penalised for unhygienic conditions caused by blocked desilting chambers and non-payment of waste collection charges, with fines amounting to Rs 70,000.
- One case against a marriage hall and catering establishment for dumping leftover food in a public place.
In addition, the squad registered 104 cases under various other categories of public nuisance, collecting Rs 20,600 in penalties. The enforcement drive was carried out under the supervision of Nuisance Detection Squad Chief Veersen Tambe. Apart from these actions, the NDS also detected 78 additional violations across commercial and public premises, recovering Rs 5.10 lakh in fines.
