Nagpur recorded 114 new domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections during the Centre’s National PNG Drive 2.0 between January 1 and May 31, 2026, while the expansion of city gas infrastructure across the rest of Vidarbha remained largely stagnant.
The data was shared by Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
According to the figures, Nagpur was the only geographical area in Vidarbha to register new domestic PNG connections during the five-month period. Other authorised geographical areas covering Akola-Hingoli-Washim, Amravati-Yavatmal, Chandrapur-Wardha, and Bhandara-Gondia-Gadchiroli reported no new household PNG connections, reflecting the slow pace of city gas network expansion across the region.
The National PNG Drive 2.0, implemented jointly by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and authorised city gas distribution companies, was conducted from January 1 to June 30, 2026.
The campaign aims to increase household PNG penetration, activate inactive consumer connections, improve utilisation of existing gas distribution infrastructure, and promote cleaner cooking fuel through public awareness initiatives, simplified digital registration and faster statutory approvals for pipeline projects.
Despite the slow progress in Vidarbha, Maharashtra emerged as one of the best-performing states under the campaign, adding 2,93,205 new domestic PNG connections during the drive.
