The internet’s darker side came under scrutiny as Maharashtra Cyber stepped in against the circulation of a controversial deepfake video that falsely linked popular YouTuber Payal Gaming to explicit content. On Sunday, the cybercrime unit said several individuals have been detained and served notices in connection with the case.

According to Maharashtra Cyber, those involved were also required to issue public apologies as part of the enforcement process. In an Instagram post, the agency said, “Several uploaders have been apprehended, served notices, and have issued public apologies. We have also identified one of the first uploaders of the content, who will be apprehended soon.”
The agency underlined its commitment to preventing the misuse of technology and ensuring legal accountability. Visuals shared along with the post showed images of the accused and video clips of their public apologies.
In one such video, Abhishek Jadaun admitted that he had shared the deepfake video link on his Instagram story without verifying its authenticity. “I had been counselled by Maharashtra Cyber and acknowledged that my actions harmed the reputation of the YouTuber. I regret it and assure that I will not repeat such behaviour in the future,” he said.
Maharashtra Cyber added that investigations are continuing and that further action will be taken against others linked to the circulation of the video.
The issue arose after a video went viral last month showing an intimate scene, with sections of social media falsely claiming that the woman in the clip was Payal Gaming. While many followers questioned the claim and pointed out signs of AI manipulation, the video continued to circulate.
Payal Gaming later issued a clarification stating that she was not featured in the video and confirmed that legal action would be pursued against those who misused her identity.
