With the security situation in Iran continuing to deteriorate amid sustained nationwide protests, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday issued a renewed advisory urging Indian nationals to refrain from travelling to the country until further notice.
“In view of the ongoing developments in Iran, Indian nationals are once again strongly advised to avoid travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice,” the MEA said. The advisory reiterates an earlier warning issued by the Government of India on January 5, when concerns were raised over worsening law and order conditions.
In a related move, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has advised Indian citizens currently in Iran to leave the country at the earliest. In an advisory posted on X, the Embassy said Indian nationals, including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists, should depart Iran using available means of transport, including commercial flights.
“In continuation of the advisory issued by the Government of India on January 5 and in view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave the country by available means of transport,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy further urged all Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to exercise due caution, avoid areas witnessing protests or demonstrations, remain in close contact with the Indian Embassy, and closely monitor local media for updates. Indian nationals have also been advised to keep their travel and immigration documents, including passports and identity cards, readily accessible.
Those requiring assistance have been asked to contact the Embassy through its emergency helplines at +989128109115, +989128109109, +989128109102 and +989932179359, or via email at [email protected].
The Embassy also requested all Indian nationals in Iran who have not yet registered with it to do so through the MEA’s registration portal. In cases where internet disruptions prevent registration, family members in India have been advised to complete the process on their behalf.
The advisories come against the backdrop of continuing unrest in Iran, where protests have entered their 20th day. What began as demonstrations against record inflation and a sharp decline in the national currency has since escalated into widespread nationwide unrest, with reports of agitation across more than 280 locations.
