Stock exchanges NSE and BSE will remain closed on January 15, 2026, due to the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has officially declared January 15 as a trading holiday for the capital market and debt segments, citing the civic body elections in Maharashtra. In a notification, the exchange said trading will remain suspended on Thursday, January 15, 2026, on account of the polls.
Earlier, there was confusion among investors after indications that trading might continue on that day. The NSE has now clarified its position and confirmed the holiday. Along with this clarification, the exchange has also released the month-wise market holiday calendar for 2026.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has also announced a holiday on January 15 for equity as well as derivatives segments.
Meanwhile, online searches for “NSE holidays 2026” have surged, reflecting investor interest in the updated holiday schedule.

Maharashtra civic body elections 2026
Polling for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will be held on January 15, with results scheduled for January 16.
A total of 2,869 seats across 893 wards are being contested by 15,931 candidates. This will be the first BMC election after the split in the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party. It will also mark the first electoral alliance between Raj Thackeray’s MNS and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT).
