In a major crackdown on electricity theft, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), Nagpur Circle, has uncovered large-scale power theft amounting to nearly ₹5 crore over a nine-month period. Between April and December 2025, the company detected 1,963 cases of direct electricity theft and another 167 instances of unauthorised usage, taking the total number of penalised consumers to 2,130.
Officials say the intensified drive has created a strong deterrent effect across the district, winning appreciation from genuine bill-paying consumers.
11,962 Installations Inspected; ₹6.02 Crore Penalty Levied
MSEDCL teams inspected 11,962 consumer installations across Nagpur district. Their findings revealed:
23,82,631 units of electricity worth ₹4.99 crore were stolen
Total penalty and assessment charges: ₹6.02 crore
Settlement and fine amount: ₹1.03 crore
In 36 severe cases, where consumers refused settlement or engaged in major tampering, criminal cases have been registered under the Electricity Act.
High-Tech Electricity Theft Methods Revealed
The crackdown exposed several sophisticated and alarming tampering techniques:
974 consumers had directly tapped into main supply lines (“kundi connections”)
989 consumers adopted hi-tech methods, such as:
Installing remote-control devices to switch meters off
Drilling micro holes behind meters to alter resistance
Manipulating internal circuits to slow meter readings
Completely disabling meters
Additionally, 167 consumers were penalised for using electricity for purposes other than what was sanctioned, resulting in charges worth ₹39.30 lakh.
Power Theft Hurts Genuine Consumers, Says MSEDCL
According to MSEDCL, electricity theft places a heavy load on transformers, leading to:
Overloading
Transformer burnout
Frequent short circuits
Repeated power outages
This affects the reliability of power supply and ultimately inconveniences honest consumers who pay their bills on time.
Crackdown Monitored at the Highest Level
The special anti-theft operation is being carried out under the direct supervision of:
Lokesh Chandra, Chairman & Managing Director
Sachin Talewar, Director (Operations)
Paresh Bhagwat, Regional Director
Dilip Dodke, Chief Engineer
Officials confirmed that further inspections will target faulty meters, average-bill consumers, and defaulters who have not opted for the Abhay Yojana.
Public Appeal from MSEDCL
“Using electricity through an authorised meter is mandatory. Citizens should avoid illegal connections that may lead to criminal action. Public cooperation is essential for uninterrupted and quality power supply,” the utility said in a statement.
