Wildlife rescuer and snake friend Santosh Soni successfully rescued an Indian Civet trapped inside an electric room at the NEERI premises near Deekshabhoomi on Friday afternoon. The rescue operation was carried out around 12 noon after Soni received an urgent distress call from the location.
Upon reaching the site, Soni found the civet stuck inside the electric room. Drawing on his extensive experience in wildlife rescue, he safely freed the animal without causing any harm. The operation was completed smoothly, ensuring the safety of both the animal and the people present.
After the rescue, Soni briefed the security personnel and nearby residents about the civet, clearing misconceptions and assuring them that the species is not harmful. The animal was later transferred to the Transit Treatment Centre at Seminary Hills for medical observation and safe rehabilitation.
Speaking about the species, Soni explained that the Indian Civet is a nocturnal, medium-sized mammal, often mistaken for a domestic cat due to its appearance. Belonging to the Viverridae family, civets are native to India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia. In India, they are commonly found in forests, farmlands, and sometimes near human settlements.
Soni added that civets are shy, peaceful, and avoid human interaction, but due to lack of awareness, people often panic when they encounter them.
In a heartwarming twist, Soni revealed that the rescue took place on his birthday. “I have spent years helping voiceless animals, but saving a life on my own birthday feels truly meaningful and deeply satisfying,” he said.
