In a major announcement that has drawn statewide attention, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma informed the Assembly that three prominent towns in the state will be renamed.
Speaking during a legislative session in Jaipur, the Chief Minister said that Mount Abu, Rajasthan’s only hill station, will be renamed Abu Raj. The popular tourist destination is known for its scenic beauty, pilgrimage sites and rich heritage. The proposed change, he said, aims to better reflect the region’s cultural roots and identity.
The town of Jahazpur, known for its historic forts and temples, will be renamed Yagyapur, while Kama, which holds religious and traditional importance, will be rechristened Kamvan.
Although the government has not yet specified a timeline for implementation, officials indicated that the required legal and administrative procedures will begin soon. Once formal approvals are secured, the new names will be updated in official records, signboards and government documents.
The decision has evoked mixed reactions. Supporters say the move helps revive cultural heritage and align present-day identity with historical traditions. Critics, however, have questioned the timing, arguing that governance and development concerns should be prioritised.
