Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, successfully performed a complex, life-saving surgery to remove a massive 13-kg football-sized ovarian tumor from a 33-year-old woman, restoring her health and quality of life after months of severe discomfort.
The patient, a resident of Nagpur, had been experiencing progressive abdominal swelling and discomfort for more than 6 months. Over time, the swelling increased significantly, accompanied by constant pain and a feeling of heaviness that began to interfere with her daily activities. Medical evaluation at multiple hospitals in the city revealed a diagnosis of mucinous neoplasm of the ovary, a rare ovarian tumor known to grow to very large sizes if left untreated.
Seeking advanced care, the patient approached Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, where a multidisciplinary team of specialists evaluated her case.
Speaking about the complexity of the case, Kawadu Jawade, Consultant, Surgical Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, said, “The sheer size of the tumor 33x22cm had started exerting significant pressure on nearby organs, leading to severe discomfort and pain for the patient. Given the complexity of the condition, the case was discussed in the tumor board, and a structured treatment plan was developed.’’
Dr. Amol Dongre, Director, Medical Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, said, “Treatment began with chemotherapy to reduce tumor burden before surgery. The patient subsequently underwent four cycles of chemotherapy to prepare her for the next stage of treatment.”
Following chemotherapy, the surgical team planned a cytoreductive surgery with a special emphasis on achieving optimal cancer control while preserving the patient’s fertility wherever possible.
Explaining the procedure further, Dr. Kawadu Jawade added “Cytoreductive surgery aims to remove all visible cancer from the abdominal cavity. It is a highly specialized procedure mostly used in advanced ovarian cancers. In this case, achieving complete cytoreduction was crucial for improving long-term outcomes, while also preserving the patient’s reproductive organs wherever feasible.”
During surgery, doctors discovered that the massive tumor involved the right ovary and had also affected the appendix. The surgical team successfully removed the tumor through right ovarian mass excision, which required the removal of the right ovary. Additionally, a portion of the large intestine, along with the appendix, had to be removed as the tumor had spread to the appendix
Following the surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged without any complications. She is currently doing well and remains under regular medical follow-up. This case highlights the importance of timely medical evaluation and multidisciplinary cancer care, particularly in conditions like ovarian tumours that can grow silently.
