Several important changes are set to come into effect across India from May 1, impacting household expenses, banking services and daily finances. The revisions include updates in LPG cylinder prices, fuel rates, credit card charges, online gaming regulations and mandatory e-KYC compliance.
As is customary at the start of every month, LPG cylinder prices will be revised on May 1. After the price hike in April, consumers are hoping for some relief this month. Oil companies may also introduce changes in the LPG delivery system, including a fixed lock-in period and OTP-based delivery verification.
Prices of air turbine fuel (ATF), along with CNG and PNG, are also likely to be revised. Any fluctuation in these fuel prices could directly impact air travel fares and household gas expenses.
State Bank of India (SBI) credit card users will also see revised late payment charges from May 1. Customers will now have to pay Rs 100 for outstanding dues between Rs 100 and Rs 500, while dues ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 will attract a penalty of Rs 500. In addition, BPCL SBI credit card holders will now need to spend Rs 1 lakh annually, instead of Rs 50,000, to avail waiver of the Rs 499 annual fee.
The government is also planning to regulate online gaming through the proposed Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI). Under the new framework, games will be classified into three categories — money games, social games and e-sports. Platforms offering real-money gaming will be required to register and comply with stricter monitoring and transaction rules.
Meanwhile, May 1 is also the deadline for completing e-KYC updates. Customers who fail to update their KYC details may face restrictions on banking transactions. Authorities have advised users to complete the process through their banks or authorised online platforms to avoid inconvenience.
These changes are expected to have a direct impact on monthly budgets and financial planning for many households.
