The Indian Meteorological Department ( IMD) has warned of a severe heat wave for Nagpur and the entire Vidarbha region for the next few days, with temperatures likely to reach 45 to 46 degrees Celsius. In this backdrop, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s health department has appealed to citizens to remain alert and follow necessary preventive measures.
Nagpur Municipal Corporation administration has initiated comprehensive measures to protect the citizens of the city from heat-related diseases under the “Heat Action Plan 2026”. All departments have been instructed to work in coordination and the health system has been kept on full alert. This information has been given by Medical Health Officer Dr. Deepak Selokar.
For the immediate treatment of heat stroke patients, 11 special “cold wards” have been set up in major hospitals in the city. Essential medicines , IV Fluids, Ice Packs, ORS and trained medical staff have been made available here. Also, more than 150 Urban Primary Health Centres ( UPHCs), Health and Wellness Centres , dispensaries and municipal hospitals in the city have been kept ready for the treatment of minor heat-related illnesses.
Under the “Heat Action Plan” , many important measures are being implemented in collaboration with various departments , institutions and agencies. Awareness messages, digital displays , announcement systems as well as drinking water and ORS facilities have been provided at metro stations through the Maha Metro Administration. Heat warning messages are being broadcast at major bus stations, public transport hubs and crowded areas.
The Labor Department has issued instructions to construction organizations, industries , factories and other labor-related establishments regarding changes in working hours , lunch breaks , drinking water arrangements and protection from heat. The Parks Department has erected green shade nets at major squares, crowded places and traffic signal areas in the city.
To provide temporary relief to the citizens from the heat, various parks and green gardens in the city have been kept open for commuters, pedestrians , hawkers , workers and passengers even during the afternoon. The Transport Department has put 31 major traffic signals in the city on “blinker mode” during the afternoon , so that drivers do not have to wait in the heat for long and the heat wave is reduced.
Citizens should avoid going out of the house between 12 noon and 4 pm , consume plenty of water , lemon water , buttermilk , ORS and wear light-colored loose cotton clothes. Wear a hat, cap or umbrella on your head while going out. Special care should be taken of children , senior citizens , pregnant women and people with chronic diseases.
If a person experiences symptoms like dizziness , vomiting , high fever , confusion , severe weakness or unconsciousness, they should immediately contact the nearest health center. Nagpur Municipal Corporation requests all citizens to take care of themselves and others in this extreme heat situation , especially help the needy and vulnerable citizens and cooperate with the administration.
