The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Nagpur city on May 28 as intense heatwave conditions continue to grip the region for the past one week.
According to the Weather Department, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely at many places in Nagpur, Wardha, Gondia, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Washim on Thursday. These districts may also witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places.
An ‘Orange Alert’ has also been issued for Bhandara, Amravati, Akola and Yavatmal for Thursday.
The IMD said wind patterns across Vidarbha are expected to change from May 29 onwards, which could bring down maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius.
However, despite the slight drop, temperatures across the region are expected to remain above 40 degrees Celsius. Pre-monsoon activity is also likely to increase, offering some relief during evening hours.
On Wednesday, Brahmapuri recorded the highest maximum temperature in the region at 46.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Nagpur at 45.7 degrees Celsius, Gondia at 45.2 degrees Celsius, and Wardha and Amravati at 45 degrees Celsius each.Bhandara and Chandrapur recorded 44.8 degrees Celsius, Gadchiroli 44.6 degrees Celsius, Akola 44.3 degrees Celsius, Yavatmal 44 degrees Celsius, Washim 43.2 degrees Celsius and Buldhana 41.3 degrees Celsius.
Akola, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Wardha also recorded minimum temperatures above the 30 degrees Celsius mark on Wednesday.
Despite the ongoing heatwave, several districts in Vidarbha have started witnessing pre-monsoon activity during evening hours, though it has not significantly affected daytime temperatures so far.
