India’s beloved Masala Chai has achieved global recognition after being ranked the world’s best tea in the latest edition of the “Top 100 Teas in the World” list released by TasteAtlas.
The popular Indian beverage secured the number one position ahead of several internationally renowned tea varieties from Japan, China and Sri Lanka, marking a major milestone for India’s tea culture on the global stage.
Known for its rich blend of CTC tea leaves, milk, sugar and aromatic spices, Masala Chai has long been a staple of Indian households and roadside tea stalls. Its top ranking reflects the growing global appreciation for bold and layered flavour profiles, moving beyond the traditionally favoured minimalist green and black teas.
India Dominates Global Tea Rankings
Masala Chai narrowly edged past Japan’s famous Hojicha, a roasted green tea known for its earthy and nutty flavour, which secured second place on the list. Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Black Tea ranked third, followed by Japan’s Sencha green tea in fourth place and China’s iconic Pu-erh tea in fifth.
India’s dominance extended beyond the top spot, with several other Indian tea varieties also featuring prominently in the rankings. West Bengal’s renowned Darjeeling tea secured the sixth position globally, while Assam Chai claimed the thirteenth spot.
Other regional Indian specialities, including Kerala’s Sulaimani Chai, Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Tea and Jammu and Kashmir’s traditional Noon Chai, also featured within the top 50 rankings.
TasteAtlas Used Strict Evaluation Process
According to TasteAtlas, the rankings were compiled using a detailed evaluation system designed to minimise fake voting and suspicious online activity. The platform said greater importance was given to reviews from verified food and beverage enthusiasts and experienced travellers.
The global guide also recognised some of India’s historic tea estates for preserving traditional tea culture. Among those highlighted were the historic Makaibari Tea Estate and Assam’s prestigious Halmari Tea Estate, both known for producing high-quality tea varieties.
With Masala Chai now receiving international recognition, India’s everyday tea culture has gained a significant place in the world’s culinary landscape, transforming a common household beverage into a globally celebrated symbol of flavour and tradition.
