The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal monsoon rainfall across large parts of the country, including Kerala, during 2026.
IMD Director Neetha K. Gopal attributed the expected rainfall deficit to the impact of El Niño, describing it as a characteristic feature of the weather phenomenon.Speaking on Saturday, Gopal said the monsoon outlook for Kerala and most parts of India was not encouraging. She noted that rainfall in Kerala during June is also likely to remain below normal.
According to the IMD, Kerala may receive some good rainfall after the onset of the monsoon around June 10.
However, rainfall is expected to weaken thereafter, resulting in an overall deficit for the month.Gopal explained that El Niño typically causes uneven rainfall patterns, leading to below-normal precipitation as well as irregular spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall. She added that while some regions may experience short periods of heavy rain, these are often followed by prolonged dry spells, a common feature during El Niño years.
Meanwhile, weather conditions changed significantly in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Saturday evening as rain, thunderstorms and strong winds swept across several areas. The showers brought relief from the intense heat and humidity that had prevailed in recent days.
The IMD has forecast pleasant weather across the NCR until June 4, with maximum temperatures expected to decline.
Rajasthan also witnessed a sudden change in weather, with sandstorms reported in Churu, Hanumangarh, Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Nagaur, Didwana-Kuchaman, Alwar and Sikar districts. Jaipur received rain accompanied by strong winds, while hailstorms were reported in some rural areas.
