A major legal hurdle in the development of Maharashtra’s promising Bhimsain Killa Gold Block in Bhandara district has been removed after the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court upheld the e-auction process for the project. The verdict allows the State Government to move ahead with the next phase of development and is being seen as a significant boost for Vidarbha’s mining and industrial ambitions.
The dispute arose after Kundan Gold Mines Private Limited challenged the selection of Auro Infra Private Limited as the highest bidder, alleging that a technical glitch during the online auction prevented it from submitting a higher bid. However, a Division Bench comprising Justice Anil S. Kilor and Justice Raj D. Wakode, relying on findings from CERT-In experts, concluded that there was no defect in the auction platform and dismissed the petition. With the litigation settled, authorities can now proceed with issuing a composite licence to the successful bidder, subject to exploration work and regulatory clearances.
Located near Pauni, the Bhimsain Killa block spans around 1.80 square kilometres and contains indications of gold along with silver, copper and lead. Geological surveys have identified quartz reefs and mineralised zones favourable for precious metal deposits, with some exploration samples reportedly showing gold grades ranging from 0.10 grams per tonne to nearly 18 grams per tonne. However, experts caution that the actual size and commercial viability of the reserves can only be determined after detailed exploration, drilling and scientific studies are completed under the composite licence framework.
Despite the uncertainty over the final reserve estimates, the project is expected to generate significant economic activity in the region. Exploration and development work will require investments in drilling, geological surveys, laboratory testing, infrastructure and support services, creating opportunities for geologists, engineers, technicians and local contractors. If commercially viable reserves are confirmed, the project could further stimulate sectors such as transportation, construction, hospitality and equipment maintenance.
Although the mineral block is situated in Bhandara, industry experts believe Nagpur will emerge as a major beneficiary. As Vidarbha’s commercial and administrative hub, Nagpur is likely to become the operational base for consultants, engineering firms, equipment suppliers and logistics providers associated with the project. The development could further strengthen the city’s position as a regional centre for mining-related services.
The strong industry interest in the project was reflected during the auction, where Auro Infra secured the block with a revenue-sharing bid of 45.65 per cent of the value of minerals dispatched. If mining operations eventually begin, Maharashtra could benefit through royalties, revenue-sharing payments, taxes and permit fees. The presence of silver, copper and lead alongside gold further enhances the project’s strategic value, particularly as these minerals play an important role in renewable energy, electronics, electric vehicles and battery manufacturing. While commercial production may still be years away, the High Court verdict has removed a key obstacle and brought Vidarbha a step closer to unlocking a potentially transformative mineral resource.
