The Bombay High Court on Monday granted Union Minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari permission to initiate legal proceedings against social media platforms X, Meta, Google, and unidentified individuals over allegedly defamatory, AI-generated and deepfake content linking him to the ethanol-blended fuel controversy.
A single-judge bench of Justice Abhay Ahuja allowed Gadkari to proceed with filing a substantive civil suit against the concerned respondents. The Court also permitted him to seek appropriate reliefs, including the removal of the alleged defamatory content circulating on social media platforms and across the internet.
The plea contends that fabricated and AI-generated posts falsely associated Gadkari with the ethanol-blended fuel controversy, causing reputational harm. With the High Court’s permission, Gadkari is now expected to file a detailed civil suit seeking legal remedies against the platforms and unknown persons responsible for creating and disseminating the content.
The matter is expected to proceed before the High Court after the substantive suit is filed.
