Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said that around 80 lakh beneficiaries have been removed from the Mukhya Mantri Ladki Bahin Yojana following a detailed verification process.
“When scrutiny of documents from various databases was carried out, it was found that 14,000 beneficiaries were men, five lakh were govt employees, 10 lakh were income tax payers and four-five lakh were those where the household owned a vehicle,” he said.
Speaking during an interview with a media channel, Fadnavis said that when the scheme was introduced, the state government had laid down specific eligibility conditions but had permitted applicants to self-certify their details. However, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) later raised concerns over the absence of a proper verification mechanism. Following the CAG’s observations, the government directed beneficiaries to complete their Know Your Customer (KYC) process.
KYC is a mandatory identity verification procedure used by financial institutions and businesses to authenticate customers and evaluate potential risks. The process helps prevent identity theft, financial fraud and the creation of fake accounts.
