Creating reels, vlogs or other social media content at airports could now invite serious consequences, including restrictions on future air travel. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued stringent guidelines banning unauthorised photography and videography in sensitive airport zones across India.
The move is aimed at preventing the recording and circulation of operationally sensitive information. Under the new regulations, passengers and visitors are prohibited from filming or photographing security checkpoints, boarding gates, apron areas, runway buses, aircraft handling zones and other restricted sections of airports without prior approval.
Those found violating the rules may face monetary penalties and, in severe cases, could be recommended for inclusion in the DGCA’s No-Fly List. Depending on the nature of the breach, this could result in a temporary or even permanent ban from air travel. Authorities may also seize mobile phones, cameras and other recording devices as part of an investigation.
Airport officials said the decision follows a growing trend of travellers creating content for social media platforms while in transit. Several videos uploaded online have unintentionally captured security infrastructure, surveillance systems and operational procedures, raising concerns about potential security risks.
Security personnel have been authorised to take immediate action against violators. While minor infractions may result in passengers being asked to delete the content, repeat offenders or those found recording sensitive areas could face stricter penalties.
Travellers have been advised to remain aware of airport regulations and comply with instructions issued by security agencies and airport authorities. Photography may continue to be allowed in designated public areas, but recording in restricted zones without permission is strictly prohibited.
Prior Permission Mandatory for Commercial Filming
Individuals, production houses and organisations planning to shoot advertisements, films, documentaries or commercial social media content within airport premises must obtain prior approval from airport authorities and relevant security agencies. No filming activity will be permitted without all required clearances in place.
