The Department of Linguistics, Foreign and Indian Languages at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) is set to introduce a Certificate Course in Communicative Japanese from the 2026-27 academic session.
The initiative has been taken in response to the growing demand for Japanese language professionals amid increasing employment opportunities and expanding economic ties between India and Japan.
The move aligns with the government’s focus on equipping graduates with language skills that enhance their prospects in countries seeking skilled Indian professionals. The demand for Japanese language experts and translators has also risen significantly due to strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The department currently offers one-year Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes in French, German, Russian and English. Unlike these courses, the newly launched Japanese programme will be of six months’ duration and will focus on developing practical communication skills in Japanese.
The course will initially have an intake of 30 students. Faculty members said the shorter duration has been planned to gauge student response in the first year. If all seats are filled and demand remains strong, the department may consider expanding it into a more comprehensive diploma programme in the future.
The programme is expected to benefit students, professionals, entrepreneurs and individuals seeking higher education or career opportunities linked to Japan and Japanese multinational companies. Proficiency in foreign languages is increasingly valued across sectors such as international business, tourism, hospitality, aviation, translation, interpretation, media, customer relations, corporate communication and multinational organisations.
The department is also working to promote multilingual education and cultural exchange. With the addition of Japanese studies, it aims to further strengthen its role in preparing students for global career opportunities.
The Department of Linguistics, Foreign and Indian Languages is located at the University Library Campus on North Ambazari Road, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur.
